Material selection of centrifugal fan blades

May 06, 2024

The commonly used materials for centrifugal fan impellers include carbon steel, stainless steel, high-performance materials, etc. The choice of material mainly depends on the operating environment requirements. The use of carbon steel in ordinary low-temperature environments is more cost-effective.

1. Carbon steel and stainless steel
The selection of blade materials for centrifugal fans usually depends on the requirements of the operating environment. In ordinary low-temperature environments, carbon steel is an economical choice because it is easy to process and has a lower price. Common types of carbon steel include Q235B, which is not only easy to process but also inexpensive, suitable for centrifugal fans with the vast majority of medium at room temperature and free from dust and corrosion. Common fan models such as 9-19, 4-72, 9-26, etc. are all made of this material.

For environments that require high temperature or corrosion resistance, stainless steel is a better choice. Stainless steel is a category that includes over 100 specific materials, mainly including martensite, austenite, ferrite, duplex stainless steel, etc. Generally, anti-corrosion centrifugal fans and high-temperature centrifugal fans are made of this type of material.

2. High performance materials
In order to improve the performance and durability of centrifugal fans, designers may choose more advanced materials. For example, fiberglass reinforced ABS material is used to manufacture centrifugal fan blades, which has the characteristics of high strength, low stress, high temperature resistance, and good dimensional stability.
For situations where wear resistance needs to be increased, carburization, aluminum oxide spraying, or tungsten carbide wear-resistant layer welding can be applied to the surface of the blade.

3. Corrosion resistant materials
If the medium conveyed by the fan usually contains corrosive substances, then it is necessary to choose corrosion-resistant materials. For example, materials such as silicon iron alloy, aluminum alloy, and ductile iron can be used to manufacture corrosion-resistant centrifugal fans.

In addition, there are also some new materials such as PP materials, which have anti-corrosion coatings and are suitable for anti-corrosion environments.

4. Composite materials
Composite materials such as fiberglass reinforced plastic (commonly known as fiberglass) are increasingly being used in fan manufacturing. This type of material has the characteristics of light weight, high specific strength, good chemical stability, and corrosion resistance.

The selection of wind turbine blade materials is also an important consideration factor. The initial material chosen for the main blade was metal steel, commonly used as composite materials such as fiberglass, polyester or epoxy resin, advanced composite materials, and laminated wood products.
